BLOOD OF THE SAMURAI(2001) DVD REVIEW (Excerpt) by Stina Chyn
Yamasato gives you what you fundamentally want from an action film: spectacle. Limbs are hacked off, mists of blood spray from wounded bodies, and the good guys cant triumph without fighting the bad guys. Yamasatos film is having a blast and you are too. I dont know about you, but I certainly couldnt ask for more! -FILM THREAT MAGAZINE

"NINJA EX" TV hero battles more evil -- this time against a dark samurai! Look for cameos by local celebrities in this new episode!
Honolulu's criminals were being good boys and girls by spending Thanksgiving with their relatives, and Ninja EX had a few weeks off, too. But the bad guys' vacations are over, so Ninja EX is back this week!
Episode 3 of Hawaii's new action TV series "NINJA EX" begs a few questions: When will our hero rid the fair city of Honolulu of evil? Will his coworkers at the architecture find out his secret identity? How long will he keep battling these persistent enemies? And, just how many martial arts has Ninja EX mastered?
The ninja's latest adventure has him fighting a dark samurai in the banquet hall of a favorite eatery at the corner of S. King Street and Piikoi. Bryan Yamasaki, who can be seen as an elf in Ala Moana Shopping Center's holiday commercials, plays the powerful samurai.
NINJA EX will be broadcast on Oceanic Time Warner Cable's OC16 on Thursday, Dec. 16th at 7 p.m. The show repeats several times during the week. NINJA EX is written, directed and produced by Aaron Yamasato of Lihue, Kauai.
"I have been receiving emails from fans all over the state, saying 'we want more Ninja EX!'" says Paul Booth, associate producer. "I think Ninja EX is well-liked because it's a good, clean fun show for families."
Viewers of all ages will have a blast with the Hawaii-style humor mixed with hilarious fight scenes reminiscent of 1970s kung fu flicks, comic book superheroes and Japanese anime.
Playing the title character of Ninja EX is Kevin Won, a champion martial artist in Wu Shu Kung Fu. He works as a Honolulu firefighter. Won's black belt in karate and brown belt in judo helped him to take part in the fight choreography. In addition to Yamasaki, NINJA EX has featured "Blood of the Samurai" cast members Michael Ng, Stephanie Sanchez and Colleen Fujioka. Later in the season, keep an eye out for former Miss Hawaii USA Alicia Michioka Jones.
Oceanic Time Warner Cable's channel OC16 presents shows that are all created in Hawaii.

11.23.04 Just returned from DRAGONFEST in Los Angeles!
The writers/producers of "Blood of the Samurai 2: Blade of Destiny (Anderson Le and Ian Hirokawa) and I(Aaron Yamasato) had a BLAST! The table we had to promote "Blood of the Samurai/Ninja EX" was located in a prime spot and gained lots of interest all day long! I guess the large posters, flyers and portable video players playing action scenes also helped! It was great to meet up with Michael Ng(Rob/Kang) and Leroy Bartlett(fight choreographer/Trexler).
It was AWESOME getting to "talk story" with masters like Jeff Imada(fight coordinator- Daredevil, The Bourne Supremacy, The Fight Club, Blade) and Steve Wang(Special effects- Underworld, Hellboy, The Guyver, Predator)!
Leroy Bartlett(fight choreography) was stoked to discover that our table was located next to Grappling(King of the Cage) Champion Dean Lister!
MUCH MAHALOS to martial arts star Gerald Okamura for hosting such a wonderful and fun event! Dragonfest gave us the opportunity to meet MANY cool stars and industry contacts!
Check out some Dragonfest 2004 pictures in the "Photo Section!"

10.16.04 PRESS RELEASE October 16, 2004 Contact: Paul Booth, 808-822-9683 pkb_1@hotmail.com www.ninjaex.com
NINJA EX is newest release from award-winning Hawaii filmmaking team!
Ninja EX, the newest martial arts series from the award-winning team of Aaron Yamasato (writer/producer/director) and Paul Booth (associate producer) comes to Oceanic Time Warner Cables OC16 starting Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. Hawaii time.
Ninja EX is Yamasatos follow-up to the early-2004 OC16 hit Blood of the Samurai: The Series, and marks Booths first television series as associate producer. The five-episode miniseries follows the adventures of Ninja EX as he protects the innocent and defends the weak.
The duo first teamed up in 2000 to create the critically acclaimed, international, award-winning local hit movie Blood the Samurai (available at Borders and Blockbuster statewide).
Our first project together exceeded all expectations, so were very excited for this next project. We believe its all about the passion, so as long as we love it, our fans will too, says Booth. Blood of the Samurai played film festivals in Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver, Hawaii, Argentina and Brazil, and won the 2001 Hawaii International Film Festivals Aloha Airlines Hawaii Filmmaker Award.
This series will go back to the heart of the original movie but this time ... its for kids, laughed Yamasato. Ninja EX will feature campy, martial arts fun with humorous pop culture references and good family fun. Adults, too, will enjoy the throwback to the 70s kung-fu cinema and comic book crime fighting.
Playing the title character is Kevin Won. This rising Hawaii talent is a champion martial artist in Wu Shu Kung Fu, and works as a Honolulu firefighter. Wons black belt in karate and brown belt in judo helped him to take part in the fight choreography. The show features Blood of the Samurai cast members Bryan Yamasaki, Michael Ng, Stephanie Sanchez and Colleen Fujioka. In supporting roles are SuperBrawl champion Egan Inoue and former Miss Hawaii USA Alicia Michioka. A bevy of local celebrities will make surprise cameo appearances.
Yamasatos talent for directing mixed with Booths passion for producing, the team hopes that Ninja EX will bring Hawaii to the attention of Mainland and international markets. Their first DVD was distributed to Thailand and Indonesia, and its sequel Blood of the Samurai 2:Blade of Destiny will be up for sale at this years American Film Market in Los Angeles.
We hope to show the film industry that Hawaii is making a change from being known (stereotypically) for its pretty locations and cheap crew to being recognized for its pool of talented producers and directors, says Booth.
Ninja EX will run for five weeks beginning Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and will repeat with a second five-week run. All programs broadcast on OC 16 are produced in Hawaii.
